Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Use Aperture Priority for most subjects: f/2.8–f/4 for portraits, f/5.6–f/8 for groups or everyday scenes. Turn on Auto ISO (cap it at 1600–3200), use Single AF for still subjects and Continuous AF for motion, and adjust exposure compensation if faces look too dark or bright.

RAW gives you more flexibility to correct exposure and color, while JPEGs are smaller and ready to share. Many beginners use RAW+JPEG at first: edit the RAW as you learn, and keep the JPEG for fast sharing. As your editing improves, you can switch to RAW-only to save card space.

Follow the 1/focal length rule (e.g., 1/50s for a 50mm lens), raise ISO to maintain a fast shutter, and use image stabilization if available. Brace yourself against a solid surface, exhale slowly as you press the shutter, and use burst mode to increase your odds of a sharp frame.

A 35mm or 50mm f/1.8 prime is affordable, sharp, and great in low light. If you want flexibility, a standard zoom (e.g., 24–70mm or 18–55mm) covers most situations. Pick based on what you shoot most: wider for travel and groups, longer for portraits and sports.

Use the 3-2-1 method: three copies of your photos, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site (cloud or another location). Rename on import with dates and keywords, and verify backups weekly so you’re protected from card failures, theft, or accidental deletion.

Use 24 fps for a classic cinematic feel, 30 fps for general web content, and 60 fps for smooth motion or slow‑motion playback. Keep your entire project at a consistent frame rate to avoid choppy edits.

Great options include the Blackmagic Camera app, Filmic Pro, and ProTake. They let you lock shutter, ISO, white balance, and focus; display zebras and histograms; and record at higher bitrates for cleaner footage.

Use a tripod whenever possible, stabilize your stance with elbows tucked, and take slow heel‑to‑toe steps. Add gentle moves like small push‑ins, and let your subject move instead of the camera when feasible.

Place a lav mic close to the mouth and use a furry windscreen to cut wind noise. Monitor with headphones, set peaks around −12 dB, and record 10 seconds of ambience to smooth edits in post.

Match orientation to your platform: landscape (16:9) for YouTube/TV and vertical (9:16) for TikTok, Reels, or Shorts. Decide before filming so your composition fills the frame with no black bars or awkward crops.
